Western Digital’s New 10000 RPM Velociraptor Drive is the Fastest Today

If you like to download stuff from the internet, then you are probably a storage geek just like me. With tons of files out there on the net, you can’t help but fill your hard drive that fast slowing your system down but you still want more. So later you end up buying a second USB portable hard drive dedicated to just downloading.

Hard disk manufacturers, therefore, tried hard to satisfy this lust for more storage by introducing innovative new, capacity-driven and fast drives every time. Take Western Digital’s VelociRaptor as an example. The company’s latest 10,000 rpm (rotations per minute) drive, is now my dream hard drive drive because of its speed and massive storage.

Test results showed that indeed WD picked an extremely appropriate name for its new hard drive. Hailed as the VelociRaptor, this new drive screeched through the PC World Test Center’s performance tests.

With a massive 300 GB of storage, one of WD’s big innovations on the VelociRaptor is its black IcePack heat sink. The drive is securely mounted onto that heat sink, and it acts as the mounting apparatus to adapt the 2.5-inch VelociRaptor for a 3.5-inch drive bay. According to Western Digital, the thermal temperature ratings on this drive are about the same as its 150GB predecessor. But the heat sink serves to reduce the drive’s temperature by about 5 degrees.
